The United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “everyone has the right to an education.” Unfortunately, education is still a distant dream for many. Some 771 million adult people worldwide do not have the basic knowledge in reading, writing and calculation. More than 100 million children do not have access to school, a limitation which will have a long-lasting effect on their future. Nearly 113 million children are not able to attend primary school. And 264 million elementary graduates are not attending secondary schools. There are around one billion adults who are still illiterate.

The above-mentioned situation prompted Hirda and Iskaashi to support the education of hundreds of children in Somalia.  Damayan raises funds to support poor but deserving children of Moslem, indigenous and Christian families in Mindanao; it has also supported the rehabilitation of a district hospital. Pearl of Africa provides educational support to ex-child soldiers in Northern Gulu, and Mamawatoto in Siroti District in Uganda. VOSAW pays attention to health issues in Ghana. Since a big number of DFD members are from low-income countries it is understandable, even logical,  that much attention be given to the provision of basic services to poor communities.
